How to Play

WORDSPIRE is a sentence-building adventure that has you raise a castle one stone at a time, learning to put words in the right order in a new language as you go.

Choose your language. Pick from 10 languages — Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Turkish, Russian, or Japanese — then choose where to begin.

Pick your level. Every language runs the full CEFR ladder, from A1 for absolute beginners up to C2 for near-native mastery, so the sentences grow with you.

Build the sentence. You're shown the meaning in English and a bank of scrambled word tiles in your language. Tap them in order to build the sentence in the answer row above, then press Check.

Raise your castle. Every correct sentence raises a new part of your castle — foundation, walls, towers, and finally the keep. Every mistake crumbles the last piece back down, so accuracy is what keeps you climbing.

Reach the keep. Ten correct sentences complete the castle and set off the fireworks. At the end you'll see your accuracy, how many stones you lost, and your best streak.

Tips: Tap a tile in the bank to place it, and tap a placed tile to send it back. Use Clear to reset the row and Check to submit. Tap the sound button to turn music and effects on or off, and Leave to return to the menu anytime.

This game improves grammar and word order

WORDSPIRE trains the part of a language that vocabulary lists never reach: how words actually fit together. Instead of recognizing a single word, you arrange a whole sentence yourself — choosing the right order, the right little words, and the right endings — and that act of construction is what moves grammar from "I understand it" to "I can produce it." Because you build from a meaning you already know in English, every sentence strengthens the link between an idea and the way your new language expresses it, word order and all. The castle gives that effort a shape: progress you can watch rising, and a small cost to rushing, so you slow down and read each sentence the way the language really works. And because sentences reshuffle and come back around within a session, you get the natural, spaced repetition that makes patterns stick rather than fade.

Best for learners ready to build sentences

If you already know a handful of words and want to start forming full phrases, this is the right next step in any of the 10 languages on offer — Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Turkish, Russian, and Japanese. The CEFR levels mean it meets you wherever you are: A1 and A2 keep sentences short and everyday, B1 and B2 add tenses, clauses, and longer structures, and C1 and C2 push into nuance and more advanced phrasing. There's nothing to set up and no rules to memorize first — you see a meaning, arrange the words, and learn the pattern by doing it. It works just as well for self-taught learners as for classroom students reviewing word order, or anyone who learns better by building than by reading.

Common mistakes learners make

A few habits slow sentence-builders down more than they realize:

Translating word for word. Languages rarely line up one-to-one with English, and forcing the English order onto your new language is the fastest way to a wrong sentence.

Ignoring word order rules. Where the verb goes, where adjectives sit, where the negative lands — these shift from language to language, and guessing instead of learning the pattern keeps the same mistakes coming back.

Skipping the small words. Articles, prepositions, and particles feel minor, but they're often what makes a sentence correct. Beginners drop them or place them in the wrong spot.

Rushing the Check. Submitting before reading the whole row back is how a single misplaced tile costs you a stone.

Not learning from a miss. When the correct sentence is revealed, glancing past it instead of reading why it's right is the surest way to repeat the error.

Tips to improve faster

Read the English first, then plan. Decide the shape of the sentence in your head before you touch a tile.

Say it out loud as you build. Speaking the sentence trains your ear and helps the word order start to feel natural.

Study the reveal. When you miss one, read the correct order carefully — that's where the real learning happens.

Protect your streak. Treat accuracy as the goal, not speed; a clean run raises the whole castle.

Replay a level. Coming back to the same level a second time turns patterns you once puzzled out into ones you simply know.

Climb gradually. Move up a CEFR level only when the current one feels easy, so each new structure builds on solid ground.
